Returning Student Application

Student applicants, please read the following information carefully as it will provide you with much of the information you need to know about the training we provide and what to expect while you are here. The application will be available at the end of this required reading.

Purpose of Training at Kingdom Air Corps

The training that we provide goes beyond just the skills required to fly an airplane; it encompasses the ministry and life skills and responsibilities you will need to be successful long-term on the field as a missionary.  Our goal is to train missionaries who are competent pilots, equipped to serve safely and effectively in remote areas. We work with our students to develop an attitude of service, resilience, teamwork, faith, stewardship, and perseverance through ministry training and hands on ministry experience.

Prerequisites for Student Applicants

  • A growing maturity and knowledge of God’s Word through personal Bible study.
  • The support and affirmation of your calling from your home church.
  • A vibrant spiritual life that demonstrates the discipline necessary to sustain it.
  • Formal education from a Bible School is desired.
  • Responsibility in ministry at your home church.
  • Experience in evangelism and discipleship.
  • Devotions and biblical instruction will be in accordance with the doctrinal statement of KAC.  Students are not permitted to propagate any views that conflict with the doctrinal statement of KAC.

Flight Training Overview

KAC provides a unique training experience for our students.  All our staff are fully supported missionaries that are here to serve and equip our students with the skills they need to go to the mission field.  Many of our staff have spent time on the mission field and are able to speak into our students’ lives about ministry and calling in addition to providing the technical training required to be a missionary pilot.

Flight Training Overview Cont.

  • KAC provides year-round flight training for our students.
  • Our year is broken into two training seasons, summer and winter.
  • Typically, students complete one certificate or rating (PPL, IR, CPL, CFI, CFII) and 1-2 endorsements (HP, Complex, Tailwheel) each season.
  • If you have your certificates and ratings and require more experience/hours, we provide the opportunity to hone your skills as you gain experience flying in the mountains.

Aviation Training – Summer

  • Our summer training season runs from mid-May to mid-September.
  • Summer is our primary training season with the most people on site and when the bulk of our training occurs.  With students, instructors, and volunteer work teams on-site, King Ranch is a busy place.
  • Summer flight training occurs primarily at King Ranch Airport (AK59), 35mi northeast of Palmer, AK.

Aviation Training – Summer Cont.

  • Summer students must arrive at KAC with a current medical certificate.
  • Summer students must arrive at KAC with the written exam for your desired certificate/rating completed.
  • When you need a break from studying, you will have ample opportunity to help in the hangar with aircraft maintenance.  Whether you are gaining experience as an A&P, or curious about learning how an airplane works, our experienced mechanics can keep you busy.

Life at KAC - Summer

  • KAC works very hard to provide you with everything you need so that you can focus on your training.
  • We have a dining hall where you will enjoy three home cooked meals a day provided by a few of our many volunteers.
  • Expect to help staff and volunteers with dishes and cleaning up the dining hall after meals each day.  Many hands make light work.

Life at KAC - Summer Cont.

  • We don’t have the capability to prepare meals for special restrictions.  If you require special food, please be in contact with us so we can help you come up with a solution.
  • Single students can plan on staying in dorm style housing with 6-8 of your fellow students or volunteers.
  • We have family and couples housing and will do our best to accommodate the needs of your family.
  • Because of our “communal living” environment that surrounds an active runway, safety is of utmost concern. For these reasons KAC has a “no pets/animals” policy. Please understand this and make other arrangements for your pets if needed.

Life at KAC - Summer Cont.

  • Bedding is provided (sheets, blankets, pillows).
  • You may bring your own camper for your family to stay in.  You must inquire beforehand, as camper spaces are limited.
  • Laundry facilities are provided, including laundry detergent.
  • Shower facilities are provided with towels and washcloths.  Bring your own toiletries.

  • KAC has a limited number of vehicles available for students, 21 and older, to borrow while they are here.  They are available by sign-out on a first come, first serve basis. Please understand, there may not be a vehicle available when you want one. Be prepared to adjust your plans and be flexible.

Life at KAC - Summer Cont.

  • Grass grows all day long during the summer in Alaska.  You can expect to be assigned an area of King Ranch to mow throughout the summer.
  • We have many volunteers on site throughout the summer helping with many of our facilities projects.  You may be asked to help clean and reset bedding for work teams as they come and go.
  • If you are local to Alaska, it is preferable that you plan to stay at King Ranch for the summer months.

Missionary Training – Summer

  • KAC works very hard to provide you with everything you need so that you can focus on your training.
  • We have a dining hall where you will enjoy three home cooked meals a day provided by a few of our many
  • Each day begins with devotions after breakfast.  Topics vary from a message from God’s Word to personal testimonies of staff, students or visiting missionaries that work in various places around the world.

Missionary Training – Summer Cont.

  • You can expect to share your testimony in devotions at some point over the summer.
  • Weekly mission’s classes address topics unique to missionaries and will help equip you with the tools you need to thrive on the field.
  • Once a month, you will attend our Spiritual Development Series class where you will gather with fellow students and staff to study God’s Word and learn spiritual disciplines.

Summer Ministry Experience - Brooks Range Bible Camp

  • Student attendance is mandatory.

Aviation Training – Winter

  • Our winter training season runs from mid-October to the end of March.
  • Contrary to popular belief, winter is a phenomenal time to fly in Alaska and offers unique challenges that will grow your skillset as a pilot.
  • Winter training occurs out of our hangar located in Palmer, AK (PAAQ) and out of King Ranch as conditions allow.

Aviation Training – Winter Cont.

  • Due to the short period of time between summer and winter training, exceptions can be made regarding the completion of your written exam prior to beginning your flight training.
  • You must have a current medical certificate prior to beginning winter training.
  • Our mechanics work hard all winter long maintaining and upgrading our fleet to get it ready for the following summer.  Opportunities abound for gaining aircraft maintenance experience in the winter.

Life at KAC - Winter

  • King Ranch has limited housing for the winter months as most of our summer housing is closed and winterized.  Depending on availability, you may have to find your own housing.  KAC has local contacts that occasionally have housing available for rent.
  • Laundry facilities are available at King Ranch during the wintertime.
  • Our dining hall shuts down for the winter and students are responsible for their own meals.
  • If you need a vehicle, we can arrange for you to borrow a KAC vehicle for the winter.  This must be coordinated ahead of time.
  • Students will be expected to help with plowing snow at our Palmer Hangar.

Financial Information

  • KAC is a nonprofit organization that operates off the donations of individuals and churches to reduce the cost of flight training, maintenance, housing, and meals for our students.  The need to take the Gospel to the nations is great and we want to help you get to the field sooner with no debt.
  • There is a cost associated with the operation of aircraft, and it is expected that you will donate to cover the cost of fuel and a small portion of the maintenance.
  • There is no fee for your flight instructor.
  • The actual cost of your training will vary greatly depending on your past training and experience.

Financial Information Cont.

  • A private pilot student can expect to spend approximately $7400 to complete their training.  This would include housing and meals for the entire summer, the costs associated with Brooks Range Bible Camp service, and 80 hours of flight training split between a Cessna 150 and 172.
  • Expect to have personal expenses for items used in training (headset, books, aeronautical charts, etc).
  • If you borrow a vehicle, please return it full of fuel, clean inside and out, and consider donating toward the cost of maintenance and insurance.
  • More specific financial details will be included in the student handbook you will receive if your application is accepted.
  • If you have questions about the recommended donation amounts, please email KAC at [email protected].
